The office was a cage of beige carpets and ticking clocks, and Alicia was its bored, unchallenged queen. Her work was a droning, endless hum, and her only fleeting distraction was the tiny man she kept on her desk. With the same detached air she might use to pick up a dropped pen, she reached down, plucked his fragile form from the carpet, and placed him on the black expanse of her office chair. Then, without a second thought, without a flicker of emotion, she sat down. The full, immense weight of her body descended, a soft, final, crushing punctuation mark to his insignificant existence. She adjusted her skirt, rolled her chair forward, and turned back to her computer. The distraction was gone. It was time to get back to work.
